Hello again. This is Paul Billington bringing you this week's edition of the Bible in the News. And this week we focus upon events in Europe. The Mail on Line (that is, the UK's Daily Mail news site) carried a stunning headline that read "Rise of the Fourth Reich, How Germany is using the Financial Crisis to Conquer Europe."
Commenting upon a meeting between German leader Angela Merkel and the French leader Nicolas Sarkozy, the paper said (I quote):

"There was forceful talk of Eurozone countries being coerced into balancing their budgets and reducing their debt through what Merkel and Sarkozy called a 'true European economic government movement' made up of all the heads of state and led, initially, by the EU President Herman Van Rompuy.

"Frau Merkel called for a 'stronger coordination of policy' and 'a new quality of cooperation' within the Eurozone.

"Although she will not yet admit it, this all suggests the first step has been taken towards a fiscal union that will leave Germany dictating the financial terms for the rest of Europe.

"It is the one country that is able to do so. Greece, Ireland and Portugal are economic basket cases. We have heard more and more about the trouble in Spain, where unemployment is over 20 per cent.

"Italy is tottering - the figures for 2010 show it has debts of 116 per cent of GDP, making the country second only to Greece at around 143 per cent."

The paper went on to say:

"Be in no doubt what fiscal union means: it is one economic policy, one taxation system, one social security system, one debt, one economy, one finance minister. And all of the above would be German."

The paper said:

"If such a plan succeeded it would make Europe effectively a German empire, with non-Eurozone countries such as Britain on the sidelines..."

For other European countries:

"This would entail a loss of sovereignty not seen in those countries since many were under the jackboot of the Third Reich 70 years ago."

This, of course is the direction of things indicated by Bible prophecy - A Europe dominated by Germany in league with Russia. That is the picture given to us in Ezekiel chapter 38, and it is reflected in the symbolism of Revelation 16:13-16. Here, the Beast is to be understood as the Magogian, or German element. The Dragon refers to the Eastern or Russian element. The False Prophet refers to the Vatican system with its pope.

Under a sub-heading which read: "The Coming European Christian Socialist State," the following summary appeared in a book by Graham Pearce written in February 1970 (over 40 years ago).

"We have described the coming Roman world as a christian-socialist state, corresponding with the iron and clay feet of the image, and with the current socialist development of society in Europe. In our survey we have considered the weakness of Western Europe; the might of Russia; the many strategic threats she is developing around Western Europe, in the Mediterranean, at the centre of the eastern flank, and in South Eastern Europe; we have seen the interest of France and also Germany to come to terms with Russia; and lastly the important position of the Vatican. In the light of this, and in the light of the prophetic word, we may expect there to be a deal between the Vatican and Russia, the Vatican preparing the way for the Russian takeover of Western Europe. Through the chain of archbishops, bishops, priests, and local priests, a suitable message will be passed to every catholic and the 'submission' of Western Europe will be assured.
Such an arrangement may be a triangular one, between the Soviet, the Vatican, and Germany; Germany being given some co-lateral political control over Western Europe for her co-operation in this empire building. This would provide a specific horn with eyes and mouth on the fourth beast of Daniel.
John Thomas' description (written in 1854) of this time of which we are now speaking is: "Russia triumphant, Europe in chains". This is a true reflection on what the prophets say. Europe is to come under cruel bondage, with freedom suppressed."

So things continue to move in the direction expected by those who have studied the prophecies.

We continue to watch the events unfold, knowing that they will lead to the return of Christ and the establishment of his kingdom in Israel.

Watch with us here on Bible in the News. We will be here again next week, God willing.
